Statement of Purpose I am interested in working in a leadership and management position. I enjoyed taking the Nursing Leadership & Management course and feel that I although I learned a lot, I still have a great amount to learn. I also enjoy nursing research. I feel that I can combine the two by using nursing research to discover the most up to date evidence based practice that will in turn help me lead and manage using the most current policies and procedures. I would like to research current evidence based practice, update policies and procedures, and educate the staff.
Goals 1. Develop my own learning experience based on my personal and professional goals. 2. Improve my self reflection abilities. 3. Obtain a better understanding of the leadership role of a unit manager. 4. Write a reflective paper that includes the progress and completion of my Capstone Project per rubric. 5. To prepare and complete a professional presentation at our conference on July 31, 2013. 6. Evaluate the nursing literature regarding best practices in fall protocol for the most effective strategies to reduce falls in skilled nursing facilities. 7. Enhance my experience and ability in searching the scholarly literature and in writing a literature review. 8. Develop an effective fall protocol in service (long term goal).
Description of Activities 1. Complete the Learning Plan to provide direction for my learning experience. 2. Perform a literature search to answer the question: What are effective strategies to prevent falls in skilled nursing facilities? 3. Write a literature review paper summarizing the results of my literature search and submit to course instructor by May 28, 2013. 4. Consult with Dr. Swift via email or telephone conference every two to three weeks as I review the literature and write my paper. 5. Follow my preceptor, the unit manager, around the unit and attend the meetings that she attends to see how she manages the unit. 6. Assess my experience the days that I worked with my mentor regarding leadership skills and effect with staff. 7. Research the number of falls and where they occurred over the past 3 months at the facility. 8. Complete the fall prevention protocol that is appropriate to the facility and a plan for its implementation. 9. Post an update of my learning experience to the class on the course blog according to the due dates posted in the syllabus and on the course calendar. 10. Read and reply to my classmates postings on the course blog. 11. Submit the draft outcome, activity, and reflection as required by its due date. 12. Complete the reflective paper that will be submitted at the end of my project. 13. Prepare and present a professional presentation to my classmates on July 31, 2013.
