I chose nursing as my profession because nursing is an occupation that allows me to care for others. I enjoy helping and caring for others and find it fulfilling. I also liked that nursing is very flexible as far as the many different fields of nursing that exist.
I believe that the core of nursing is caring for a person holistically. This includes not only caring for someone physically, but mentally and spiritually as well; caring for an entire person and not just their diagnosis.
I believe that the focus of nursing is the patient. They should be the number one priority and should be treated as such. Nurses need to act as advocates for their patients. They need to be involved in their care by allowing for proper communication and allowing them to express their wants and desires about their care and treatments.
My vision for myself as a nurse is that I will provide the best care possible to all of my patients. I will treat them with respect and use my knowledge and critical thinking skills to help educate them, care for them, and help them attain the highest level of health of which they are capable.
To live out my philosophy of nursing, every day I must remember this about:
1. My patients: They are a person and not just a “diagnosis”. I need to provide them with holistic care and treat them with respect. They need to be my number one priority and I need to act as an advocate for them at all times.
2. My patients’ families: They are the patients’ support system and need to be educated and informed of what is going on and be involved in decision making.
3. My fellow health care professionals: They are my coworkers, they are knowledgeable, and should be treated with respect. We need to work together to provide the best overall care for the patient.
4. My own health: I need to care for myself physically, mentally and spiritually. Keeping myself balanced and well rounded allows me to give the best care that I can to my patients.
