Outcome 2
This outcome focuses on learning experiences that I have gained to integrate reliable evidence from multiple perspectives to inform practice and make reasonable clinical judgment. When thinking back to these experiences, the Nursing Research course clearly comes to mind. Before this course, I really had no idea the amount of studies and research that go into deciding best practice information. There are several elements that must be involved in order for a study to be valid and yield perfect results.
Healthcare is constantly changing and improving. With the many forms of technology available at the touch of a fingertip, there is so much information that can be found related to healthcare. Some of this is great information while some is not good or true at all. With this, comes the importance of using evidence based research for best practice guidelines.
The first discussion in the Nursing Research course involved researching what evidence based practice actually is and why it is so important. The second discussion taught me what quantitative research is, and most importantly, how to properly evaluate it to ensure that it is valid information that can be incorporated in to our current practice.
By combining both of these lessons with other lessons learned in the class, I am now more aware of evidence-based practice in the healthcare field. I consciously read nursing journals and peer reviewed articles to keep my knowledge up to date and current. I have also made an effort to reach out to my fellow nurses and discuss what I have learned and how it can help to improve the care that we give. Most importantly, I am using the knowledge that I have gained through this reliable evidence to make reasonable clinical judgments in my nursing practice. I think that by setting an example for others, I am showing them the importance of keeping up with current evidence-based practice as well. This creates better patient outcomes and avoids giving outdated and possibly harmful care.
Nursing Research Discussion 1
My name is Krystal Roundy. I have been a nurse for about three years. I currently work at a sub-acute rehabilitation center in St. George. I am married and do not have any children as of yet. I have not dealt much with evidence-based practice (EBP), but I am very excited to take this course to learn more about it.
I agree with the positive reasons stated in our textbook for the use EBP. “The most important reasons for consistently implementing EBP are that it leads to the highest quality of care and the best patient outcomes” (Melynk, & Fineout-Overholt, 2011). With the growing use of EHR’s and the data that is more readily available and easily accessed, best practice guidelines are frequently changing. Standards of practice should change with the current evidence being found. I firmly believe that patient outcomes are improved with the use of EBP in the healthcare field. It is important that we keep up on EBP so we are not giving outdated and possibly harmful care.

Nursing Research Discussion 2
According to Saddler, quantitative research “quantifies data by using numbers and statistics…it uses objective measures and is very specific” (2006, p. 314). To evaluate a quantitative research study, our text lists three questions that should be asked:
1. Are the results of the study valid?
2. What are the results?
3. Will the results help me in caring for my patients? (Melynk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011).
I think it is important to use these criteria when evaluating a quantitative research study to show the validity, reliability, and applicability of the study. A study that includes these criteria can help change current practice and in turn, improve patient care and outcomes.
